Former Senior Upstate Advisor to ex-Governor joins Hancock Estabrook, LLP
Firm opens Albany office
Hancock Estabrook, LLP recently announced that Michael W. Schell, former Senior Upstate Advisor for the Office of the Governor of New York State, has joined the Firm. He will work at the Firm’s newest office, located at 90 S. Swan St., Albany, N.Y.

Mr. Schell has had a long career representing the interests of Upstate New York in both the public and private sectors. His private practice experience includes founding and serving as a principal partner and trial attorney at the Watertown-based firm Maloney, Schell & Eisenhauer, and as of counsel at the Syracuse-based firm of Cherundolo, Bottar & Leone. He was a founder of the United States District Court Northern District Bar Association and president of the Jefferson County Bar Association. He was also appointed to the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group and chaired the Merit Selection Panel, charged with vetting candidates leading to the appointment of United States Magistrates for the United States District Court, Northern District of New York.
Mr. Schell retired from private practice in 2007 to become Senior Advisor for Intergovernmental Affairs and then became Senior Upstate Advisor for the Office of the Governor in 2008. He also served as chairman of the Jefferson County Democratic Committee, founding chair of the New York State Democratic Rural Conference, executive chairman of the State Democratic Party and member of the Democratic National Committee.

Mr. Schell has served on numerous boards of community organizations. He is a recipient of the Jefferson County Bar Association’s Community Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jefferson County Democratic Committee.
Mr. Schell is a graduate of the Columbus School of Law, The Catholic University of America and Ithaca College. He is admitted to practice in New York and before the United States Supreme Court.
